Catoctin
SkatePark - Leesburg - VIRGINIA
Catoctin
SkatePark is a 12,000 square-foot lighted skating
area for in-line skaters, skateboarders, and *bikes
built by the Town of Leesburg Parks and Recreation
Department in conjunction with the Friends of Ida
Lee. The area includes an assortment of obstacles,
small parking area, storage shed, benches, picnic
tables, vending machines and free parking.
The design includes a skating surface skimmed with
1.5 inches of asphalt and coated to provide a smooth
skating surface, as well as an assortment of obstacles-
launch ramps, fun boxes, rail slides, and half-pipes
- to challenge skaters' skills. As an example of the
design elements included in the park, the half-pipe
structure is a "U" shaped piece of equipment,
the most popular in the past decade. Skaters drop
in from 10-foot high verticals and skate back upward
to the other side.
The facility was developed through a unique collaborative
effort, initiated by a group of young Leesburg skaters,
that included public and private financial support,
the in-kind donation of services, and grass roots
fundraising efforts ranging from raffles and food
sales to the "Battle of the Bands" special
events.
If you are interested in learning how to use the elements
