Recognizing the tremendous popularity of extreme sports, the
Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government's Division of Parks
and Recreation, area skate enthusiasts and concerned citizens set
out to construct a skatepark in Lexington. Their goal was to
design a facility to provide a safe, controlled environment, where
these athletes could enjoy their sport. For almost two years, city
officials, young adults and volunteers worked to make this park a
reality. Woodland Skatepark officially opened on Sunday,
September 19,1999.
The skatepark
would not be possible without the extraordinary support of the community
including the leadership provided by the Triangle Foundation and the
Aylesford Neighborhood Association.
Established in
1980, the Triangle Foundation is a private, non-profit, non-political
group of Central Kentucky citizens and corporations dedicated to beautifying
and enhancing the Bluegrass. The Foundation is made up of local citizens
who are dedicated to making Lexington a better community in which to
live. Foundation members give of their time and resources; projects
are self-initiated capital fund projects for which there are no other
monies available. Operating under the motto, "Private Initiative
for the Public Good," other Foundation projects include: Triangle
Park, Thoroughbred Park and the development of the Fayette County Courthouse
Plaza.
